MICK ROCK
Mick Rock’s iconic fine art photography has immortalised and documented key moments in music history, whilst capturing significant moments in the lives and careers of many cultural icons. Globally known as The Man Who Shot The Seventies, Mick is the best-known rock ’n’ roll photographer in the world. His production and direction of four David Bowie music videos in the ‘Sound and Vision’ collection (‘Jean Genie’, ‘Life on Mars’ ‘Space Oddity’ and ‘John I’m Only Dancing’) which are now in the permanent collection of MOMA, New York, would alone be enough to be an artist’s lifetime highlight, however, Rock continues to take incredible images of today's rock n pop icons.
Available as limited edition fine art prints, Mick's photography has become highly collectible. He is also the subject of feature-length documentary on Netflix, SHOT! The Psycho Spiritual Mantra of Rock.
Mick has photographed David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Madonna, Roxy Music, Syd Barrett, The Kinks, Freddie Mercury, Motley Crue, Andy Warhol, Ozzy Osbourne and Peter Gabriel as well as some of today’s big success stories - The Killers, Ellie Goulding, The Black Keys, Daft Punk, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg and Dave Grohl.
He has also shot world-famous album covers that include Lou Reed’s ‘Transformer’, Queen’s ‘Queen’, ‘Queen 2’ and ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ albums and Iggy and The Stooges’ ‘Raw Power’. Rock was the photographer for ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’
West Contemporary Highlight
Mick Rock remembers how David Bowie once commented on his photographs. “I remember he said very specifically “Mick sees me the way I see myself.” West Contemporary sourced works for Café Royal Hotel in London, for their new Bowie-themed bar, Ziggy’s Bar. Serendipitously, 50 years ago, Rock had been taking photos of Bowie in the hotel bar on the ground floor. West Contemporary also launched an exhibition of Mick’s works and a book signing of ‘GLAM!’ released by Taschen, which featured some of Rock’s vast archives of photographs of Bowie.
Then in March 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic began to sweep across the globe, Mick Rock and West Contemporary decided to launch an NHS fundraiser, with 20% of all sales of never-before-seen images in Mick Rock’s archives going to NHS Charities Together. Images turned-fine art photographic prints included portraits of David Bowie, Kate Moss, Syd Barrett, Freddie Mercury and Kate Moss as well as the story behind each shoot.
