Mark Beattie
Mark Beattie MRSS is an award-winning British sculptor and light artist. His contemporary work is popular amongst both art collectors and interior designers for a wide range of residential, corporate and public spaces. His orb-like sculptures find homes in both indoors and outdoors, particularly his works involving neon or LEDs, which merge art with design and an architectural aesthetic with functionality. Mark has had a remarkable career so far, winning the Midlands Open Prize and the Xerxes Sculpture Prize in 2015, and that same year being elected in to the Royal Society of Sculptors (MRSS). He has gone on to be shortlisted for numerous other art prizes and awards, earning serious critical and commercial acclaim.
Mark creates abstract sculptures using various metals ranging from miniature to monumental in size, and has developed a signature style through which his sculptures contain movement and fluidity. From childhood, Mark has been fascinated with circles, considering them an abstract symbol of calm and happiness to which we are drawn - reflected multiple times in the world around us, and largely in nature. “There’s an energy in neon light and not just the current running through the glass, but I see a positive energy which I hope will transfer to the viewer and create some tranquility, even if just for a second” says the sculptor.
Mark studied a BA Hons in Contemporary Art Practice at Leeds University and an MA in European Arts Practice at Kingston University. To date, he has exhibited in over 60 exhibitions, group and solo, and has a strong following of collectors worldwide. His work is in corporate and private collections throughout Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and the USA. He recently introduced his Fracture series, which can be seen at West Contemporary Editions, an additional more geometric avenue to his signature orbs, yet still maintaining his signature harmonious balance of form and space.
